Le Fresnoy is taking part in the European ‘AI with Us’ summit in Lille

On this occasion, Le Fresnoy will take part in the round-table discussion on “AI and culture” and will present works created by artists such as Justine Emard, Léa Collet and Hicham Berrada…

WORKS ON CONTINUOUS DISPLAY

Justine Emard
Chim[AI]ra, 2024

A synthetic fauna, co-designed with artificial intelligence, unfolds within a three-dimensional ecosystem. These chimeric avatars are the result of a subtle collaboration with generative algorithms, derived from 3D scans posted online, thus bringing to life a collective dream in which artificial intelligence generates new forms of life. 

These digital entities exist in an in silico world, where they are subject to a dynamic climate generated by the computer’s own temperature fluctuations. As they cross certain thresholds, the creatures deactivate visual layers of the image, gradually making their digital environment more liveable.

Léa Collet
Digitalis, 2023

Unprecedented processes of mutation and mutualism involving flowers and utilising artificial intelligence.

Using a science-fiction narrative, this project centres on a group of nine pupils from Marie-Curie Secondary School in Tourcoing who are seeking to mutate, to transform themselves into flowers. This group works in collaboration with an artificial intelligence. They meet plant biologists and examine Brendel’s models – anatomical reproductions of flowers made in the 19th century from papier mâché and various other materials.

Collectively, the nine secondary school pupils embark on a process of identity-building and human-flower hybrids, taking the form of technological creatures. Through film footage, floral masks, networks of algorithms and 3D modelling, the bodies of these young teenagers are transformed into hybrid entities, ‘botanico-humanoids’.

Rony Efrat
, *Failing Forward*, 2024

After a unsettling conversation with her ex, Rony realises that she bears a striking resemblance to LaMDA, Google’s language model. Intrigued by the parallels in the conversations between Google’s engineers and LaMDA, she decides to investigate. She wants to find out whether her life, her past relationships or changes in society are influencing this similarity.

For *Failing Forward*, the director drew inspiration from a *Washington Post* article published in 2022 in which a Google engineer claimed that the AI had become self-aware during her conversation with it. 

The film won an award at the ADAGP (Association of Authors in the Graphic and Visual Arts) ‘Révélation Art vidéo Art numérique’ competition.

LE FRESNOY, CREATIVITY AND AI

The emergence of advanced technologies, such as AI, is profoundly changing creativity, the role of the artist, and the very nature of artworks.

Le Fresnoy addresses the artistic, technical, ethical and legal aspects of the creative projects it produces.
Artists at Le Fresnoy explore technologies: from new human-machine interfaces to biology, from mathematics to deformable robotics, and from materials analysis to nanotechnologies and datavision; in doing so, they engage in dialogue with scientists and discover a wide range of research fields.

This is illustrated by the artist Ella Altman, who has just completed a film incorporating AI at Le Fresnoy:

“The use of AI should first and foremost serve to question the way in which it is currently integrated and how it continues to develop. We must consider the implications of a future where content is increasingly driven by AI, and ensure that we are the ones in control, rather than it dictating how we create. From an ethical and political perspective, the use of images created by others is the driving force behind AI — it learns from a collective database, just as humanity has learnt from all human artistic creation since cave paintings. Consequently, the question should focus more on how we feed and train AI to use these materials, rather than on whether or not to use them. […] The way in which AI reproduces images can also offer new narrative perspectives, allowing us to question how our perception is structured’.

Act II of AI in France

In February 2025, France brought the world together to set out its vision for artificial intelligence. Eighteen months later, with the G7 summit in Évian just three days away, it is time to assess what has changed — in our factories, our hospitals, our classrooms and our regions.
With this Summit and Festival, ‘AI with Us’ is reaching a new milestone: moving from the era of infrastructure to that of applications, and from investment to collective ownership.

For the first time on this scale, the Summit on 12 June will bring international leaders and leading figures in artificial intelligence into direct dialogue with ordinary citizens — employees, carers, teachers, entrepreneurs, parents and secondary school pupils.
Not just another conference. A face-to-face encounter between a vision of the world and the reality of everyday life.

From 13 to 19 June, the ‘Festival de l’IA avec nous’ brings together businesses, universities, schools, research laboratories, hospitals, charities, public sector organisations and cultural organisations from the Hauts-de-France region. Around a hundred certified initiatives will be on show, offering opportunities to showcase, experiment and debate.
