A talk organised in partnership with CEAC/University of Lille as part of the educational programme, open to the public. Matthieu Raffard has been working as part of an artist duo with Mathilde Roussel since 2017.
In this lecture, Matthieu Raffard, a member of the Raffard-Roussel duo, will present the research methodology they have developed to engage with the multidimensional materiality of technological objects. Building on their book *À contre-emploi*, published by Premier Parallèle, the artist will present a series of practical and fictional activities that lie halfway between a research project and an artistic endeavour.
We will therefore learn how magnet fishing can help us better understand the fundamental physical nature of electric scooters, how building a working model can help us grasp the fundamentals of electronic computing, or even how the furious destruction of a printer might encourage us to reconsider the emotional bonds we form with this sort of machine.
Biography
Matthieu Raffard has been working as part of an artist duo with Mathilde Roussel since 2017. Their work explores the ethical and aesthetic issues surrounding the use of technology in a context of extractivism and resource depletion. Through the construction of machines, the creation of polyphonic installations and the production of videos, they develop devices that make the materiality of technology visible. Together, they seek to bring questions arising from feminism and ecology into the field of art. From this perspective, their practice focuses particularly on the relational, affective and psychological dimensions of the technological objects we use on a daily basis. They teach visual arts at Paris 8 University as well as within the transdisciplinary research-creation programme ArTeC.
The work of Matthieu Raffard and Mathilde Roussel has been featured in numerous exhibitions in France and internationally, the most recent of which took place at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, as part of the Paysages Mouvants festival in 2025; at the SoRA Sanctuary Strother School of Radical Attention in New York, as part of their exhibition *Meet my printer!* in 2025; at the Media Art Festival in Arad (Romania), entitled ‘Ready Media’, in 2023; at the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in Paris during the ‘Printemps de l’esprit critique’ exhibition in 2024; at Galerie D of the Fiminco Foundation in Romainville as part of the ‘Exceed your vision’ exhibition in 2023; at the Octopus Gallery in Paris as part of the ‘(s)low art – Art in the Age of Low-Tech’ exhibition in 2022. Their book *À contre-emploi: An Experimental Manual for Reawakening Our Technological Curiosity* was published in October 2025 by Premier Parallèle, and their book *Bourrage Papier: Political Lessons from a Printer* was published in November 2025 by Les Liens qui Libèrent.
