The education department offers a wide range of activities linked to our exhibition and film programmes, giving you the chance to discover what goes on behind the scenes in the creation of images, whether still or moving. As well as guided tours and screenings, the artists at Le Fresnoy run artistic workshops – either one-off sessions or a series of sessions leading to a collaborative project.

Panorama 28
From 11 September 2026 to 3 January 2027
As the institution’s major annual event, the Panorama exhibition offers visitors the chance to discover more than 50 previously unseen works in the fields of visual art, sound and digital creation, produced by artists from Le Fresnoy.
Opening hours: The Panorama 28 exhibition will be open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, from 2 pm to 7 pm. It will run from 11 September 2026 to 3 January 2027. For groups, additional time slots may be available in the morning from 9.45 am.

GUIDED TOUR

Accompanied by a guide, your group will be able to explore the exhibition via a tour featuring works selected to suit the pupils’ ages.

A self-guided tour of the exhibition, without a guide. For school groups, it is recommended that pupils be divided into small sub-groups supervised by a group leader. Pupils remain the responsibility of their accompanying adults at all times during the visit.
Please note: Even for self-guided visits, advance booking is compulsory. Please ensure you let us know the date and time of your group’s visit, as well as the number of people in your group.
OBLIQUE TOUR
Duration: 1
hour Group size: Maximum 15 people per group

ages Partway between a game and a guided tour, this activity invites participants to explore the artworks using cards called ‘Oblique Questions’. ‘Where is the centre?’, ‘What duration does this bring to mind?’, ‘If you had to add something, what would it be?’. These are just some of the questions that lead to a more intuitive approach to the exhibition.
Accompanied by a guide, the pupils will be invited, in small groups, to collectively formulate an answer to the question written on the card they have drawn, followed by a discussion.
An original visitor experience that places the participants’ feelings at the forefront.
The Panorama 28 workshops
Led by artists from Le Fresnoy, the art workshops linked to the exhibitions are experiments exploring the themes addressed by the works on display, or stemming more generally from the artists’ practice and creative worlds. They offer an introduction to a variety of techniques (photography, writing, sound, video, etc.).

SHORT FILMS PROGRAMME

Group size: Groups can range from 15 to 96 pupils. Depending on the number of pupils, the screening takes place in the screening room of the Panorama 28 exhibition or in one of Le Fresnoy’s cinemas.
Numerous short films are produced each year by artists on Le Fresnoy’s courses. Whether fiction, documentary or experimental, shot in live action or in 3D, these films offer a wide variety of worlds and styles.
As a complement to a guided tour or a workshop, we invite you to introduce your pupils to a selection of films produced this year.
The films are introduced by a guide and followed by a discussion. Depending on the length of the short films and the age of the pupils, two to three short films are screened in one hour.
Meeting with an artist

Group size: Groups can range from 15 to 96 pupils. Depending on the number of pupils, the screening takes place in the workshop room, in the screening room of the Panorama 28 exhibition, or in one of Le Fresnoy’s cinema theatres.
A one-hour session with an artist to discuss their career, their practice and the stages involved in creating their work – whether it is being presented as part of Panorama or is still in progress – be it a film, installation or performance. These discussions enable pupils to encounter a unique artistic perspective, and give them the opportunity to follow the thread of an artist’s research from one project to the next, and to understand what is at stake in the creative process.
An Introduction to Audiovisual Media
Le Fresnoy – Studio national is an audiovisual production facility, equipped with a film set, a photographic laboratory, a sound recording and mixing studio, and a wood and metal workshop. We offer a range of activities throughout the year, giving you the chance to go behind the scenes and discover how a production is made.

As an art school and audiovisual production centre, Le Fresnoy boasts a range of professional facilities, such as a film set, a recording studio, a photo lab and more. Join a guided tour to discover the history of Le Fresnoy and the spaces used for film production and digital installations. This is an opportunity to learn about the stages involved in film production and the various professions within the film industry. Due to the availability of the venues, these tours are only offered between September and February.

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: THE ORIGINS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

This workshop offers an introduction to the pinhole camera (camera obscura), a handmade camera used to produce film photographs.
A practical and fun workshop lasting two hours, during which participants will learn the basics of taking photographs with a pinhole camera, framing, image composition and developing photographs in the darkroom, to return to the roots of photography.
COLLAGE AND PHOTOGRAM WORKSHOP

Choice between black-and-white development or cyanotype.
A photogram is a photographic image produced by placing objects on a light-sensitive surface exposed to light. A simple technique for introducing participants to the photographic process. Using objects placed on paper and collages of photographs on transparent paper, the pupils create a composition which is then developed.
A practical and fun workshop lasting two hours, during which participants will develop their photographs in the workshop’s darkroom and leave with their prints.

INLAY WORKSHOP

Colourful paper shapes come to life as if by magic; a child turns into a paper bird or swims beneath the sea… In this workshop, come and learn the basics of stop-motion animation. A camera mounted on the ceiling will allow you to experiment and animate all sorts of objects without worrying about gravity!
Participants will discover the secrets behind making animated films and play an active part in creating their very first animated film.
ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP

Close-up, transition, credits, flashback, sequence, script, etc. If these terms mean nothing to you, come along and join our introductory course on film editing!
Write a short screenplay based on the images provided, then bring the story to life by piecing together different shots taken from films produced at Le Fresnoy to create your story.
By focusing on the editing stage, this introductory course will enable participants to grasp the basics of video editing using DaVinci software, whilst drawing on their imagination to create a narrative from the provided footage.
LIGHT WORKSHOP

Pupils will be asked to set up a number of lighting effects required to create a small, realistic fictional scene. By adjusting various light sources
to set the scene’s lighting atmosphere, the aim is to familiarise pupils with the concepts of natural and artificial light so that they can continue to pay attention to these aspects in their own creative work or hone their eye as cinema-goers.

NOISE OR VOICE RECORDING WORKSHOP

Choice between voice recording or sound effects.
In Le Fresnoy’s professional recording studios, participants will recreate the soundtrack for a short animated film by recording sound effects or voices. What objects can be used to recreate the sound of a fan, falling rain or a plant growing? What tone of voice should be used to bring this character to life? Imagination and concentration will be key to recreating these sound effects or recording dialogue, with the help of a sound engineer.
Due to space availability, these workshops are only offered between September and February.
Animated Films in Focus
STOP-MOTION WORKSHOP

BLACK-AND-WHITE TO COLOUR WORKSHOP

The pictures have lost their colour! Using felt-tip pen drawings, collages or
stickers, the children will bring colour back to black-and-white images printed on paper, and will be able to add new characters and details. The finished work will then be scanned and animated to bring to life a new, colourful film.

FILM WORKSHOP

This workshop invites pupils to reflect on the film-making process by creating their own animated film, which they will draw using coloured felt-tip pens on strips of transparent 16mm film.
When projected at over 24 frames per second, the drawings come to life in a flurry of colours and animated shapes. The artist and projectionist Emilien Dubuc will reveal all the secrets of this cinematic process, which illustrates the very principle of cinema, and will give you the chance to take part in the creation of a collective film, made up of fragments of film from each participant.

FILM
The aim is to introduce people to cinema by screening classic and contemporary films from our cultural heritage in cinemas.
Cinema of Languages
‘Cinéma des langues’ is a programme of films shown in their original language with French subtitles. It is organised by Le Fresnoy for secondary school teachers throughout the year, enabling them to attend one or more screenings at the cinema with their pupils. Three languages are available: English, Spanish and German.
Selected as much for their cinematic quality as for their cultural significance and what they reveal about a social, political or historical context, these films enable pupils to engage with a living language and a variety of accents, whilst also highlighting potential links between different subjects (History, Literature, Geography, Philosophy, etc.).
Price: €3 per pupil, free for accompanying adults. A minimum of 50 pupils is required to organise a session.
Environmental Focus
A selection of films suitable for children aged 8 and over, designed to raise environmental awareness and tailored to a young audience. Price: €3 per pupil; free for accompanying adults. A minimum of 50 pupils is required to organise a screening.
National schemes for media literacy education
ÉCOLE ET CINÉMA
Le Fresnoy welcomes school classes taking part in the ‘Ecole et cinéma’ scheme, an initiative launched jointly by the Ministry of Culture and Communication (the National Centre for Cinematography, CNC) and the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research (the Directorate-General for School Education, DGESCO), which have been driving the project from the outset.
The Terre Neuve association has been commissioned by the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs (DRAC) to implement and coordinate the scheme in the Nord department.
The aim is to introduce schoolchildren to cinema by showing them, in a cinema, films from our classical and contemporary heritage.

COLLÈGE AU CINÉMA
Le Fresnoy welcomes school classes taking part in the ‘Collège au cinéma’ scheme, a national initiative to raise awareness and promote film education, coordinated by the Nord department. It stands out for the originality of its programme, the educational support provided by teachers and the progressive learning journey it offers pupils throughout the year.

APPRENTIS ET LYCÉENS AU CINÉMA
Le Fresnoy welcomes school classes enrolled in this scheme, which is coordinated by Acap and CinéLigue for the Hauts-de-France region.
‘Lycéens et apprentis au cinéma’ offers pupils at vocational training centres (CFA), rural youth centres (MFR) and general secondary schools, technological, agricultural and vocational secondary schools, through encounters with films and artists, the opportunity to reflect on the staging of images and sounds, to take a closer look, and to engage with the complexity of the world and the diversity of its representations.
On the programme:
- 2 to 5 films to catch at the cinema,
- meetings and workshops with professionals from the film and audiovisual industries,
- training courses for teachers and trainers,
- worksheets, resources and tools on cinema for pupils and teaching staff,
- a programme of complementary cultural activities.

Sessions on request
If you would like to show your class a specific film that is relevant to your curriculum or that you have spotted in our weekly programme, this is possible subject to certain conditions.
Please provide the following details for your enquiry
- the film’s title
- the number of students who will attend the screening (at least 50 pupils)
- the number of accompanying persons
- a proposal for several possible
screening slots. Your request will be considered subject to the film’s availability from the distributor and depending on the schedule.

OPEN PROCESS
Open Process is an outreach project that offers you a unique insight into the creative process behind the works produced at Le Fresnoy. Go behind the scenes of their creation through interactive videos, artist interviews, photo and audio reports, and research materials (sketches, quotes, sources of inspiration, prototypes, etc.), via a website and a travelling exhibition.

Le Fresnoy’s mission is to foster the creation of innovative works that incorporate digital creative tools. The works produced are extremely varied and reflect the diversity of their creators’ cultural backgrounds, as well as their social, political, economic and environmental concerns. Around fifty works are produced each year. They are showcased annually in a major exhibition entitled Panorama.
The art loan scheme is open to all schools that wish to showcase the works to their classes and have an exhibition or screening space. Please contact us to discuss your project; we can offer you a selection of works tailored to your needs.

Book an activity
For all booking enquiries, regardless of the activity, please complete the booking form in advance:
Time slots and dates
You will be offered a choice of time slots based on the information you provide in the form.
Please complete the form above even if you are organising a self-guided tour of the exhibitions for a group, so that we are aware of the date and time of your group’s visit during our opening hours.
Groups will be welcomed 15 minutes before the start of the guided tour, workshop or screening.
Payment
A quotation will be sent to you based on the information provided in the form; please return it to us, signed, to confirm your booking. Any booking cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged.
Please ensure you do not exceed the maximum number of participants specified at the time of booking. For cinema screenings, the number of pupils charged will be the number stated at the time of booking, regardless of how many are absent on the day.
The invoice for the activities will be given to you at reception on the day of your visit or uploaded to Chorus. The invoice can be paid on the day by cheque, cash or credit card, or settled at a later date by cheque or bank transfer.
