The term ‘mixed media’ traditionally refers to the use of diverse materials in painting or sculpture. But what about digital or cinematic forms of creation, where production and distribution methods are often subject to strict technical standards and standardised formats?
Julien Maire will share his experience and reflections on the moving image.
Drawing on the English-language definition of ‘time-based art’ — or ‘temporal media’ — his work explores various approaches to the production and projection of moving images.
His research is characterised by a desire to circumvent conventional audiovisual techniques in order to rethink the modes of perception and visual storytelling.
During this masterclass, the artist will present the software and hardware tools that have contributed to the design of his devices and installations, whilst outlining the theoretical and aesthetic motivations that guide his practice.

This workshop is led by Julien Maire. Born in 1969, he has been working since the mid-1990s at the intersection of several disciplines, including performance, media installation and film, producing live and hybrid performance pieces.
His works have been presented at Transmediale, Ars Electronica, the Digital Art Festival, the European Media Art Festival, the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Oberhausen Film Festival, Sonar, ZKM, ICC Tokyo, Empac and Powerstation Shanghai.
Julien Maire was the winner of the Update_2 Biennale in 2008 and a finalist for the World Technology Award in New York in 2009; his work has been recognised with three honourable mentions at the Prix Ars Electronica, and he was also the winner of the Omosiroi Prize in Osaka in 2022.
“Through his installations and performances, Julien Maire seeks to systematically explore audiovisual technologies. His research coalesces into a hybrid manifesto that oscillates between media archaeology and the development of a new constellation of digital technologies. His works prove to be genuine prototypes, in the etymological sense of the term (from the word ‘proto’, meaning ‘first’ or ‘primitive form’, and the word ‘tupos’, meaning ‘imprint’ or ‘mark’), producing unique technological configurations that generate images of a new quality.”

The ON/ART cross-border project aims to create a stimulating cross-border community in which media artists, digital creators and the two organisations work together, share resources and carry out joint projects. Le Fresnoy – Studio national brings years of professional experience in media arts and a strong connection to contemporary technologies. Designregio Kortrijk has extensive expertise in networking and community building. This exchange of knowledge creates new opportunities for new media artists and creators on both sides of the border. As part of this initiative, and with a view to sharing expertise and learning, Designregio Kortrijk and Le Fresnoy – National Studio for Contemporary Arts are organising this workshop.
This workshop is co-funded with support from the ERDF. This call for proposals is organised as part of the ON/ART micro-project, which was approved under the INTERREG France-Wallonia-Flanders programme.
