Filipa Ramos, PhD, is a writer and curator whose long-term research investigates art’s relationship to ecology.

How are contemporary artists responding to the climate crisis through moving images and time-based media? In this talk, writer and curator Filipa Ramos will discuss pioneering ecological approaches developed by artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds, considering how film, video, performance and installation engage with environmental transformation through duration, rhythm, movement and non-linear experiences of time. The talk explores the relationship between ecology as a subject and ecology as an artistic practice, asking how the temporal and material qualities of moving-image works can cultivate other ways of perceiving and relating to the living world. It also considers the environmental responsibilities involved in producing, presenting and circulating such works, and the role that artists, art schools and cultural institutions can play in developing more ecologically responsible practices.

Biography

Filipa Ramos, PhD, is a writer and curator whose long-term research investigates art’s relationship to ecology. She is particularly interested in animals and time-based media. Ramos teaches at the Art Institute at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel and is Curator of the 2027 edition of LIAF and co-curator of the 2028 Bergen Assembly with Lucia Pietroiuisti. Together, they also founded the arts, humanities and science festival The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish (2018-onwards). Her recent projects include BESTIARI, the Catalan representation at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024), Songs for the Changing Seasons for the 1. Klima Biennale Wien (2024) and in 2022, Persons Personen, the 8th Biennale Gherdëina (both with Pietroiusti). In 2021, she co-curated Bodies of Water, the 13th Shanghai Biennale with Andrés Jaque, Lucia Pietroiusti, Marina Otero Verzier and Mi You. Her most recent book, The Artist as Ecologist (2025), discusses the ways in which contemporary artists embrace environmentalism.
