Desertion / [or: "I don't want to adjust to this world"] - Film - 17min - 2026

Film

A fictional building complex in Berlin. Patients of all sorts live and become here. Slow days blur and the building edges on sentience. In reoccurring patient parliaments, the inhabitants mobilize. Fears grow about the permanence of the situation that houses this chosen family.

A world shaped by organized abandonment looms. A door opens. The motives of European welfare states, to quench socialist revolution by handing out sugary crumbs of bread, invites an idea to wander the hallways: desertion.

The ills are not shown.

In 1970’s Germany, the Socialist Patient Collective (SPK) practiced and theorized patients as a revolutionary class and were criminalized via use of §129 (the forming of criminal and terrorist organizations) —a staple paragraph in leftist discourse which highlights its repressive use against activists and dissidents. Through filming in locations currently used for social services, from emergency housing to a vocational retraining facility, and a crew largely made up of care workers, the film converges onto present day Berlin.

Born in Essen, Germany, in 1996, Niclas Hille lives and works in Berlin. A self-taught filmmaker, he has developed a body of short films, sound works, and installations. *Broken Heart Syndrome* examines how economic considerations alienate the dignity of dying within the Christian funeral industry. *Café Helium 2035+* imagines helium-addicts who vandalize Berlin in the year 2035. In the animation *The Sign Language of Smoke*, addicts seek out couples therapy in a dystopian landscape. His educational formation is shaped by studies in philosophy, literature, and fine art, including the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) under Josephine Pryde and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Alongside his artistic practice, he works as an untrained social worker, caregiver for people with disabilities, and freelance videographer.
