Les Peaux-Roches

Flint, a siliceous rock composed of quartz and chalcedony, evokes both the earliest traces of human craftsmanship and the deep strata of geological time. It shares its matrix with silicon — a key component of supercomputers — where the earth-bound slowness of the mineral and the abstract speed of computation echo one another, inscribing our gestures and our bodies in stone as well as in code.

The works brought together in the exhibition explore, each in their own way, how contemporary recording technologies and computerised environments shift our perception of time, redraw the contours of an ‘elsewhere’ and, by implication, of a ‘here’. From Calais to the Opal Coast, amidst cliffs, strata and invisible networks, the landscape bears the traces of human movement (and exile). It is here—where the artist was in residence and where their projects are rooted—that the exhibition examines the way we view our humanity—at the intersection of the sensory, the mineral and the digital.

The artist

Céleste Rogosin, a Franco-American artist and filmmaker (born in 1989), lives and works in Paris. She graduated from Le Fresnoy in 2021. Originally trained in dance, theatre and film, she blurs the boundaries between these disciplines in her audiovisual installations. Her perspective — shaped by the way in which technology impacts the body and fuels the imagination — is focused above all on people and community: both poetic and context-driven, her works address the notion of emancipation by exploring representations of an ‘elsewhere’ or the utopian quest for a different future, both individual and collective.
