The instantaneous sharing of images played a major role in my understanding of the triple disaster at Fukushima and the fissures it revealed at the scientific, political and social levels. I became aware of the power of images to create links, to overcome spatial and temporal fractures through the illusion of immediacy and plenitude, to bring us intimately close to the inaccessible, to try to keep the disaster zone connected to the rest of the world.
I started writing this fiction when I went to the site with a friend who was involved in rebuilding a power station.
This film attempts to evoke the event as a collective trauma that contaminates human relationships, intimacies and perceptions of reality. It mixes real footage and computer-generated images, evoking personal memories that have been remade.
Synopsis: A father is forced by his job to live in a high-risk area, separated from the rest of the world because of its instability. He will die there. Since then, his older son has been bringing up his little sister alone. He carries within him snatches of a past that he finds hard to put into words, and is trying to reveal some of its truths. He wants to cross the borders of their world to find out what this zone contains.
Ysana Watanabe
Born in Marseille in 1999, Ysana Watanabe lives and works in Paris. After studying at the École Duperré, where she specialised in Image, Media and Publishing, she made two short films on the figure of the evaporated and voluntary disappearances, before joining Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains.
