Joseph is looking for Mara. Mara is trying to find herself. He meets up with her at a party. People are talking about a white whale that has been washed up on the beach. Mara wants to see it, and Joseph wants to follow Mara – never mind the gathering storm.

Ysé Sorel travels through forms; movement gives her the inspiration to shift boundaries. Put simply, she writes and makes films.  After studying philosophy and performing arts, she turned to cinema. She entered Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains (Martha Graham cohort) in 2024 and completed a PhD in research-creation under the supervision of Dork Zabunyan (University of Paris 8) and Marc Crépon (ENS Ulm) in 2026. Her research focuses on the critical potential of cinema to make the Catastrophe visible and tangible – a term encompassing and bringing into resonance ecological, cosmic, personal and social disasters – and, beyond that, to attempt to restore our connection with a damaged world. Despite it all, she still believes in the power of images. By reworking ancient myths and symbols, her films resemble contemporary tales that interrogate our era through an aesthetic of “realistic fantasy” and a sensory approach. She also appears on *Mediapart*’s cultural programme *L’esprit critique* and writes regularly for *AOC*, an online daily newspaper she helped launch in 2018. Her writing has appeared in journals such as *Habitante*, *Marge(s)*, *Trafic*, *Mouvement*, and :arts:publics:. *Une tour modes d’emploi,* a work of documentary fiction which she co-wrote with the architect Nicolas Sisto, was published by Polygone in April 2026.
