Many years after I left Colombia, I received an unusual invitation to accompany a music group in the Colombian Pacific. Which is how, almost without realising it, I found myself back home. I did not tell anyone I was coming and the return was a powerful one. During my time there I tried to find the house I had left behind. This film comes out of that search. How does one go back home? And what does this place consist of?
This film is anchored in the Pacific because the music, the presence of water and the vitality of life in this region were what helped me find paths towards reconciliation and emancipation in the experience of migration.
The Pacific territory is marked by Colombia’s armed conflicts and the scars of colonisation. This is the region where former slave communities took refuge, and it is in these same waters that every year thousands of whales come from Antarctica to breed.
This film stems from the need to seek out new voices – including poetic ones – that call for new epistemic constructs, unusual ways of being in and inhabiting the world where individual experience crosses over into collective history with its wounds, stitches and mutations.
Daniel Duque is a Colombian artist working in the fields of film, installation and drawing. His artistic practice aims to generate new dialogues within the tangled web of ‘reality’, where the personal, water, history and the supernatural interact. The relationship between territoriality and corporeality is a fundamental concept in his work, which is informed by his study of the rhythms of the Afro-Colombian diaspora. By drawing on both new and ancestral forms of knowledge and technology, Daniel seeks out new fissures in time, capable of fracturing and recomposing the formal and narrative structures of the present. His work is deeply shaped by the experience of migration and by a state of the body in the making, which permeates his conception of the moving image. Daniel lives and works in France, where he puts together projects joining Latin America and Europe. His films have been screened at international festivals such as CPH:DOX (Denmark), Alternativa FF (Colombia), GO Short (Netherlands), Vienna Shorts (Austria), amongst others. Daniel studied at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in the Martha Graham cohort (2024–2026).
