Strange images are tucked away in a photo album, pictures of a Russian childhood in an very colourful yoga club. Today, its members are involved in other cults, online and via social media. All come with their fair share of propaganda, gurus, rites and, of course, sacrifices.
In this semi-documentary tale shot through with dark humour, Aleksandre Zharaya stages scenes from the family archives in a mix of vernacular creativity and underlying political and family violence, culminating in a disturbing Saint John’s Eve.
Born in Omsk, Russia in 1998, Aleksandre Zharaya (he/him) lives and works in the North of France. He studied animation and holds two masters in fine arts. His work moves between visual arts, writing, and film. At the centre of his creative process is the construction of political, familial and historical fictions, as well as the figures haunting their margins.
