Bouchra Khalili

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French artist born in Casablanca in 1975, based in Vienna and working itinerantly. She was raised between Casablanca and Paris and later graduated in film studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and visual arts at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts de Paris-Cergy. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses film, video, installation, photography, screen printing, textiles, and publishing.

Collaborating with members of communities rendered invisible by the nation-state model, she develops strategies of storytelling at the intersection of the subjective and the collective, and suggests hypotheses for new forms of belonging inherited from narratives of collective emancipation that have been erased from official histories.

In 2023, her work The Circle received the Sharjah Biennial Prize and in 2017 The Tempest**Society was awarded the Ibsen award. She was also awarded the Columbia's Global Center Fellowship (2019-2020) , the Harvard's Radcliffe Institute Fellowship (2017-2018), the daad Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship (2012),and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics Fellowship, New York (2011-2013).

Bouchra Khalili heads the Department of Artistic Strategies at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and is a co-founder of the Cinémathèque de Tanger.
