Installation

In the 80’s, my father, an electrical engineer, filmed our everyday lives in Latin America through a Super 8 camera. I grew up watching our images through a spotlight. My fascination centered on watching the tapes rolling in the spools and the turning of the handleto rewind them, unweaving the time to start again… In 1990 my father wanted to return from Brazil to Chile, his homeland. He never returned to film again and the last footage he made remained tucked away in a box, having never been revealed, until this year. A última bobina de filme super 8 que você filmou* is a project which began following the thread of my memory, with a constant journey to find out what souvenirs and time, were stored in this last roll of film. A reel that had to wait more than 25 years, had to wait until the person who shot it no longer existed, had to travel thousands of miles, travelling to other continents and return again to the place of origin to be revealed. It’s a project that reflects my own approach to the cinema and the textile art, as old ways embedded and tell stories, where the family memory has been woven and the materiality also was part of the narrative. It is a work which focuses on the subject of memory, obliviousness and weft of fate, but also in the need for reminiscences and its persistence over time due to old technologies, material mediations and handmade process; under operations of transfer, coding and translation that made everyday memories persist, influencing in the reception of images and the relation we had with them.
