Film

Anamnèse belongs in the cinematic legacy of found footage: an image held by a body, a camera that moves forward because it still doesn’t know what it is looking for.
Following his father’s hospitalisation, a son films the setting of the event. He films because, at a time when he ought to be present in another way, the image becomes his only way of staying by his bedside.

Little by little, this journey opens up onto another, older space, as if the hospital held within its blind spots the memory of other rooms and corridors.

The film seeks out what the family narrative has left unsaid: work in the building trade, exposure to asbestos, hostels for migrant workers, bodies displaced, housed, worn out, kept in makeshift structures.

The hospital and the hostel thus echo one another as two forms of administration of the same body: the one that is treated too late, the one that has been exposed and exploited for too long.

Between intimate inquiry, political memory and architectural horror, Anamnèse moves forward in a murky perceptual continuum in which a story is transmitted to us through the blood without us having experienced it. The son attempts to fix an image of his father, to find a place, a location, a form that would hold up. But the clearer the portrait becomes, the more it is distorted: what was meant to bring them closer creates a rift, and the image ultimately reveals the impossibility of reconstructing a life without at the same time transforming it.
