Film
Produced almost entirely in 3D animation, IN A CENTURY OR TWO is a docufiction about Chinese workers during the First World War, the 140,000 men recruited from 1916 onwards by the French and British armies to support the Allied war effort in France. Although they were not combatants, many perished from disease or poor working conditions during and after the conflict.
Set against footage showing the journey and transformation of a block of Portland stone into a gravestone, a narrative unfolds inspired by Fabian Ware, founder of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Through his words, the film reveals the reluctance to fund graves for Chinese labourers, while highlighting Ware’s commitment to their cause. IN A CENTURY OR TWO addresses both the place of migrant labourers during the war and the principle of equality in the face of death.
Born in Paris in 2000, Emma Huang is a French artist and filmmaker of Chinese origin.
