During my 2021 exchange program at the Berlin School of Fine Arts, I befriended Maiy C. Hô. Despite the pandemic's challenges, Maiy often worked in the studio, and we shared intimate conversations about our backgrounds and socio-political situations. On June 24th, I tragically found her body hanging from the ceiling.

In memory of Maiy, I have created a short film project entitled After All. The film takes an external perspective on her sudden death through the eyes of a "witness".

It features a discussion between a therapist and the student who discovered Maiy's body. Through this film, I hope to contextualize Maiy's passing by shattering the fallacy that somehow suicide can ever occur in a vacuum. We need to recognise our failures.

Chongyan Liu is an artist and filmmaker originally from Guizhou, China, who currently resides in Lille, France. She earned a Bachelor's degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2017 and a Master's degree from Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2022. Her creative output spans multiple mediums, including documentary and fiction filmmaking, video installation, painting, and sculpture.

Chongyan's work has been showcased at numerous prestigious international film festivals, such as IDFA, Beijing International Short Film Festival, Seoul International Pride Film Festival, and Videoex. She explores a range of socio-political themes, often drawing from her personal experiences while adopting a compassionate perspective that recognises the nuances of interpersonal relationships. Her MFA graduation show in Paris centred around the sensitive subject of the suicide of a trans woman who was a close friend of hers.

In addition to her two latest short-fiction films, After All and Speak in a Whisper, Chongyan is currently focused on exploring the intersection of video art and film.

Her multidisciplinary approach to filmmaking seeks to redefine boundaries within the medium and challenge preconceived notions of the practice.
