Born in 1995 in GUIZHOU (China)

Chongyan Liu is an artist and filmmaker originally from Guizhou, China, who currently resides in Lille, France. She earned a Bachelor's degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2017 and a Master's degree from Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2022. Her creative output spans multiple mediums, including documentary and fiction filmmaking, video installation, painting, and sculpture.

Chongyan's work has been showcased at numerous prestigious international film festivals, such as IDFA, Beijing International Short Film Festival, Seoul International Pride Film Festival, and Videoex. She explores a range of socio-political themes, often drawing from her personal experiences while adopting a compassionate perspective that recognises the nuances of interpersonal relationships. Her MFA graduation show in Paris centred around the sensitive subject of the suicide of a trans woman who was a close friend of hers.

In addition to her two latest short-fiction films, After All and Speak in a Whisper, Chongyan is currently focused on exploring the intersection of video art and film.

Her multidisciplinary approach to filmmaking seeks to redefine boundaries within the medium and challenge preconceived notions of the practice.
