JOHN GERRARD

Cuban School (Sancti Piritus), 2011

Realtime 3D

Based on hundreds of photographs and topographical data collected by satellite, John Gerrard has built a 3D model of a school built in the 1960's on the outskirts of Havana. Thanks to video game software that he has adapted, the spectator can observe the building from all angles and live, with the variations of light at the time in Cuba. This school, designed in a period of utopia, is now a complete ruin but technicians and students are actively renovating it in order to keep it functional. By presenting this outdated building as a virtual image - in the way architects present their future projects - Gerrard questions social and architectural utopias.
